Our History

J. Lorber has called the Delaware Valley home since 1918, when our founder Joseph Lorber opened our doors at 1932 Germantown Ave. in Philadelphia. Joseph and his father, Max immigrated to New York City in 1908 on the Hamburg-America Line ship S.S Amerika. A tin smith by trade, Max Lorber started M. Lorber & Co., located in New York City as a manufacturer of galvanized iron leaders, stove pipes, and elbows specializing in sheet iron works for the trade.

With an entrepreneurial spirit, Joseph left NYC for Philadelphia and started his own business, J. Lorber Co. a supplier of roofing and heating supplies in 1918. Joe saw a post-war need for well-stocked plumbing and heating supply house in Philadelphia. Even though the first year was a challenge; Joseph had the determination, dedication, and desire to succeed. He would eventually incorporate the business in 1932 as The Northeast Manufacturing & Supply Co, but would change the name back to J. Lorber Company.

After serving World War II, Joe’s three sons Martin, Arthur and Edwin returned to the family business. Martin Lorber expanded and managed a branch in Washington D.C in 1954 which would later be sold in 1968 while Ed managed the Philadelphia location. The company expanded in the early 70’s and moved into a bigger facility in Bensalem PA from it’s previous location off Germantown Ave. In 1976, Steven Lorber, Ed’s son, entered into the family business. Further opportunities allowed the company to open doors in Pennsauken NJ in 1999. Our Pipersville location opened doors up in 2006. In 2012 Steven’s son, Michael joined the business. In the fall of 2017 J. Lorber opened it’s newest location in Newtown Square PA.

J. Lorber is a family owned and operated business with an independent spirit. Many things have changed over the last century but one thing which has not changed at J. Lorber is “service the old fashion way”.
